What you need to understand on the first day
ChatGPT is not a search engine. On Google you type words, and Google shows links. In ChatGPT you explain a job, and it does the job.
Once this one difference is in your head, everything else gets easier. If you Google "sweet shop name", you get other people's shop names. If you tell ChatGPT, "I am opening a new sweet shop in Mirpur, I want a name in the Bangla style, give 20 names, and next to each write the meaning in two words", it will make up names for you.
So you are not searching, you are giving a job. It is the same as when you give a job to a person: you have to explain it.
Know one more thing at the start. It does not pull answers to your question out of a store. It writes fresh every time. So the same question will get two different answers, and a wrong answer will sound just as tidy as a correct one. Keeping these two things in mind cuts both the frustration and the risk.
The first day, start to finish, step by step
Everything can be done from a phone, you do not need a computer. If you follow the format below, you will have something useful in hand on the first day.
- Open an account. Open chatgpt.com in the browser, or download the official ChatGPT app from the Play Store or App Store. Tap Sign up and go in with an email or a Google account.
- Avoid fake apps. There are plenty of fake apps in the app stores. Check the developer's name, and skip any app that asks for money before you even get in. In the real app you can start work on a free account.
- Keep the first job small and familiar. Give something whose result you can verify yourself. For example, copy one of your own old Facebook posts and write, "rewrite this to be more attractive, within 3 lines".
- Do not take the answer as soon as it comes. Read it first, then give one correction. "Make it shorter", "use fewer English words", "say the price bigger". This is the step where the real quality is made.
- Write a three-line identity and keep it in your notes. Who you are, what your business or studies are, who your readers are. Paste this at the start of every new chat, so you do not have to tell the whole story each time.
- Mark the numbers, dates and names in the answer. Verify these three things separately. The rest, such as the structure of the writing or the line of advice, is usually safe.
- Copy the answer to your work and save it on your phone. A chat can get lost, your notes will not.
- Open a new chat when the subject changes. Shop posts in one chat, a school application for your son in another.
- For seven days, give it one real job a day. You do not learn from made-up questions. After a week you will see for yourself which jobs it saves your time on and which it wastes it on.
Should I write in Bangla or English
Writing in Bangla is fine. ChatGPT is now good enough at understanding and writing Bangla, and you will not feel a gap in everyday work.
Two things need saying honestly, though. There is far more English text on the internet than Bangla, so on complicated technical subjects, asking in English usually gives a more exact answer. And on facts specific to Bangladesh, such as government rules or local prices, there is a higher risk of wrong answers in both languages.
There is an easy trick. Ask the question in English, and add at the end "give the answer in simple Bangla". You get the benefit of both sides.
If you cannot type Bangla, add Bangla to your phone's keyboard, or just say it by voice. Even if you write Bangla in English letters, such as "amar dokaner jonno post likhe dao", ChatGPT understands. But there are fewer mistakes when you write in Bangla script.
When you take Bangla text back, check two things separately. One, too much English. If you do not say otherwise, it often writes a Bangla that nobody says aloud. Writing "simple spoken Bangla, as few English words as possible" cuts that down. Two, spelling and conjunct letters. It sometimes stumbles on Bangla spelling, so read it yourself once before publishing.
How a chat works
Inside one chat, ChatGPT remembers the earlier things. So when you say "make it a bit shorter", it understands which one to shorten. This is the most useful side of ChatGPT, and beginners use it the least.
Knowing what really happens inside makes the work even better. It is not remembering anything. Every time it answers, the whole text of that chat so far is put in front of it again, fresh, and it reads all of it and then starts writing.
The text held in front of it has a maximum size. Once past that size, the earliest parts start to drop out. So in a very long chat it seems to forget the instructions from the start, and when you open a new chat it knows nothing of the earlier one.
So work this way.
- One chat for one job. Open a new chat when the subject changes, otherwise old context will leak into the answers.
- When a chat gets too long, say "write everything that has been settled so far in 5 points". Take those five points to a new chat.
- When you get an important answer, copy it and save it on your phone.
How to ask so you get a good answer
The biggest cause of a bad answer is not a bad question but an incomplete one. Add four things and the result changes.
Who it is for. "For customers" and "for a bank manager" will not be the same text.
Context. What your business is, what the problem is, what you tried before. Two lines of context raise the quality of the answer a lot.
Size and form. "In 5 points", "within 100 words", "as a table", "in very simple Bangla".
An example. Give an old piece of writing you like and say "write in this style". This is the most powerful trick, and the least used.
And the biggest point: do not treat the first answer as final. Polish it two or three times, like "stress the price more", "reduce the regional flavour", "drop the last line", and what you get will be much better than the first answer.
For a complicated job, add one more line: "before you start, ask me 5 questions whose answers would make your work better". This brings up in advance the places where it would have quietly guessed.
An evening for a freelancer in Chattogram
Suppose a freelancer in Chattogram does graphic design work. A foreign client took the work and has not paid for two weeks. He is stuck writing the email, because if he writes it harshly he fears losing the client, and if he writes it softly the money will not come.
On the first try he wrote,
The client is not paying, write me an email.
What came was long, formal and timid. Right at the start an apology like "I am extremely sorry to bother you", pointless explanation in the middle, and no clear ask at the end. If he had sent an email like that, there would have been no reply.
On the second try he gave the full context,
I am a freelance graphic designer living in Chattogram. I made 8 social media banners for a client, I handed in the work 14 days ago, he accepted it, but he still has not paid the remaining 60 percent. I have reminded him twice and got no reply. Write an email in English, at most 120 words. The tone should be professional and calm, but clear. There should be no line of apology. At the end there should be one specific ask. Do not add any date, contract clause or threat that I have not mentioned.
This time what came he could send with a small change. The whole job took seven minutes, of which five went in writing the instruction. Before, writing this email would take him more than half an hour, and he would still hesitate before sending.
In one place it still made a mistake. In the first draft it had written "as per our signed agreement", though there was no written agreement between them. Even after the last-line condition was given, once it put in something that does not exist. This is why there is no substitute for reading the whole thing with your own eyes before sending.
A coaching centre in Rajshahi, and how a Sunday evening was saved
Suppose a small coaching centre in Rajshahi, with 22 students in the class nine batch. A test has to be given every week, and setting the questions used to eat the teacher's Sunday evening, about an hour and a half.
On the first try he had written only "make 15 questions from the climate chapter of class nine geography". For half of what came, the answers were not in their book, because it had pulled in outside information. If that had gone into the students' hands, it would have caused nothing but confusion.
The second time he pasted the whole chapter from the book and wrote,
From the text above, make 15 multiple-choice questions. Each has 4 options. 5 easy, 7 medium, 3 hard. Do not give the answers with the questions, give them at the very end in a separate list. Do not use any information from outside the text above.
This time, of the 15, 9 were fit to keep as they were, 4 needed a small touch, and he dropped 2 because two options meant almost the same thing. All told it took 25 minutes.
The last condition did the real work here. Without the line "do not use outside information", it goes beyond the book while filling gaps. And the dropping is a job the machine cannot do. It is caught only by the teacher's eye.
Where it is good and where it is not
| Job | How ChatGPT will do | What you do |
| Tidying text, shortening, making it polite | Very good | Read it and match your own tone |
| Translation between Bangla and English | Good | Check names and technical terms |
| Making ideas and lists | Very good | Trim them to your reality |
| Explaining a hard subject simply | Good | If in doubt, check a second source |
| Writing code and finding bugs | Good | Run it and test |
| Today's news and market prices | Weak | Do not trust it unless the search feature is on |
| Government rules and legal sections | Risky | See the government website or a lawyer |
| Medicine, doses, diagnosing disease | Risky | Not a substitute for a doctor |
| Large sums of accounting | Unreliable | Check on a calculator |
| Facts about a specific person or organisation | May make up mistakes | Verify yourself |
Note the last four rows of the list. It is not just that ChatGPT will make a mistake there, it is that it will say the mistake with great confidence. You cannot tell from the tone whether it is true.
Mistakes beginners make
| Mistake | What happens | Fix |
| Giving a one-line instruction | It fills the gaps and gives an average answer | Add context, the reader and the size |
| Leaving with the first answer | The weakest draft gets used | Give two or three corrections |
| Running every job in one chat | Old context leaks into new answers | A new chat when the subject changes |
| Writing words like Google | You assume it will find information | Explain the job in a sentence |
| Believing the numbers in the answer | A confident mistake gets printed | Verify numbers, dates and names separately |
| Pressing it with "that is wrong" | It apologises and moves to a wrong answer | Ask "where did you get that, how sure are you" |
| Pasting secret information | The information stays with the company | Change the names and figures before giving it |
| Paying as soon as the free limit ends | You start spending without knowing you need to | Try another free service first |
Free or paid
For most people a free account is enough, at least for the first few weeks.
The free tier usually has some limits, such as how many times a day you can use the most powerful Model. Companies change these limits and prices often, so there is no point writing a specific taka figure here. Before buying, check the current price on the official site.
To take a paid plan from Bangladesh you need a card that works for international payments, which many people do not have. For this reason many people keep working on the free tier, and that is nothing to be ashamed of.
Take the decision to spend money by working it out, not by feeling.
| Question | If the answer is "no" | If the answer is "yes" |
| Has the free limit run out again and again in the last two weeks | Wait | Paid can be considered |
| Is this job daily, or twice a month | The free tier is enough | Paid can be considered |
| Is the time saved by AI coming back as money | Do not spend | Paid can be considered |
| Is the job not working on any other free service | Keep working there | Paid can be considered |
Besides ChatGPT there are good alternatives such as Gemini, Claude and Copilot, and each has a free tier. When the limit runs out on one, you can carry on working in another. For many people, two free accounts do the work of one paid account.
What you should never write in a chat
What you write is stored on the company's servers, and staff may see some conversations to verify quality. So keep some things out as a rule.
- NID number, passport, birth registration
- Bank account, card number, the PIN or OTP of bKash or Nagad
- Lists of customers' phone numbers and addresses
- Secret contracts from the office, salary files, patient information
- Any password or API key
If needed, change the information. In place of a real name write "Customer 1", in place of a real figure put a nearby number. The work will still come out right, and the risk will not be there.
An example will make it clear. Suppose you want a reminder message written from a list of 30 customers who owe money. You do not need to paste the whole list. Keep one row, change the name to "Customer 1" and the amount to "5000", then say "write one message in this mould, I will put in the names for the rest myself". The result is the same, and the risk is zero.
Remember one more thing. Before working with office information, find out the organisation's rule. Many offices have a written policy on this, and pasting a file without knowing it causes trouble later.
How to use it in your day
Shopkeeper. Write the product's name, price and one discount, and ask for three kinds of Facebook posts. See for a week which text gets more response, and keep asking for that style. Copy a post that did well and say "write one in this style for a new product". This explains the tone and the length together.
Teacher. Give the main text of the chapter and say, "make 15 multiple-choice questions for class nine, give the answers separately below, do not use information from outside the book". After you get the questions, check them yourself once, because a wrong question can get in.
Student. Paste a hard English chapter and say "explain in simple Bangla, then ask me 5 questions to check me". Do not copy the answer and hand it in. You do not learn from it, and you get caught.
Job seeker. Give both your CV and the job advertisement and say, "which part of my CV is weak for this post, and what needs to be added". Before the interview, let it ask you questions and you answer. Do not let it add any made-up experience to the CV, and forbid it clearly.
Freelancer. Have your English message fixed before you send it to the client. Saying "write in a professional but friendly tone" gives good results. Before sending, check whether it has put in any date or promise on its own.
Homemaker or guardian. A week's shopping list, a school application for a child, the wording for a relative's wedding card: for these jobs it is a good assistant. Just remember, do not take advice on medicine or a child's health from here.
When you need a website. Ordinary ChatGPT will give you code, but that is not a working site. If you want to build a live site directly by describing it in plain words, a tool like BanglaCodes helps, where you can build and publish a site without knowing code. A site published for free works fully and even installs on a phone; only if the messages from the contact form must really reach you do you need lifetime hosting.
If you want to read in one place what AI really is, how it works and where it stops, see What is AI, in plain language.
When not to use ChatGPT
The biggest mistake beginners make is going to look for the answer to every question here. In some places the honest answer is that this is the wrong tool.
For today's specific information. Dollar rate, train timetable, exam date, last day of admission. If search is not on, it will give old or made-up information. The official website is the right place for these.
For calculations. The total of the month's sales, the interest figure, a sharing-out sum. A calculator or a spreadsheet will do this exactly, and it will not. But after you have done the sum, you can have it explain the result, and it does that job well.
For health decisions. Fever, pain, medicine doses, a child's problem. You can get a general idea, but the decision is the doctor's.
For law and documents. Land papers, a reply to a legal notice, contract clauses. You can have a draft made, but before signing a professional's eye is a must.
Where your own voice is the real thing. A condolence message, a letter of apology, words written to someone close. Four untidy lines in your own language are better than ten tidy ones.
Where learning is the whole point. If you take the answer before you try yourself, the skill does not form. Do it yourself first, then have it catch your mistakes.
Questions and answers
Why does the same question get a different answer each time? Because ChatGPT does not recite answers from memory, it builds them fresh each time, and a little randomness is kept in on purpose. You can use this. Ask an important question twice, and if the two answers differ a lot, you know the subject needs checking.
Can I work with ChatGPT using pictures or voice? In many cases yes, but which feature is on which plan changes often. If you see a camera or microphone icon in your app, that is on for you. The ability to ask with a picture is very useful, such as giving a photo of a handwritten page and asking for it typed out.
What do I do if the answer stops halfway? Just send "continue", and it will start from where it stopped. If you want a very long text, ask for it in parts rather than all at once, and the result will be better.
Will ChatGPT show what I write to others? Your chat does not come in front of other users. But what you write is kept by the company and may be used to improve the service. In settings there is usually a way to turn off history and use in Training, but even so, not writing secret information is the safe rule.
How will I know if an answer is wrong? Remember three signs of doubt. A specific number, a specific date, and a specific name. If any of these three is in the answer, verify it separately. The rest, such as the structure of the writing or the line of advice, is usually safe.
Can I ask questions using a file or PDF of mine? In many cases yes, and asking with a file cuts mistakes quite a lot, because then it speaks from the text in front of it and not from memory. Still, check important figures against the document, and before uploading a secret file, think about the permission side.
What else can I use besides ChatGPT? Gemini, Claude and Copilot. Each has a free tier, and all three are useful for everyday work. If you get stuck on one, ask the same question on another, and comparing the two answers makes it easier to catch mistakes.
Will others be able to tell the answer was written by AI? If you copy it exactly, it often shows, because a familiar mould and some stock phrases keep coming back. The services called "AI detectors" are not reliable, and they mark innocent writing wrongly. The best way is to change the draft into your own language, and then the text becomes yours and the quality goes up too.
In short
- ChatGPT is not a search engine, it is an assistant that does jobs, so explain the job rather than typing words.
- You can start on a free account on your phone, and for most people the free tier is enough.
- Writing in Bangla is fine, but for hard technical questions, asking in English and getting the answer in Bangla works better.
- Add context, the reader, the size and one example and the quality of the answer jumps, and do not treat the first answer as final.
- It is excellent for tidying text, translation, ideas and learning, but you cannot rely on it for today's news, government rules, medicine and big sums.
- Never write an NID, bank details, an OTP, a customer list or a password in a chat.
