Can I make a 1280 x 720 YouTube thumbnail without a thumbnail app?
Yes. Write what the video is about in the chat and the thumbnail comes at exactly 1280 x 720 pixels, YouTube's 16:9 shape. Three or four big Bengali words are set in a real font, one word in another colour. One press downloads it as a PNG, and you upload it in YouTube Studio. No app to install and no cost.
Three steps to a thumbnail
- Write the topic and the words: What the video is about, and the three or four words the thumbnail should carry. If you have a photo of yourself, add it in the chat and it will be placed.
- Check it small: The thumbnail appears in the chat. On a phone YouTube shows it small, so look at it small; if the words are hard to read, say "make the text bigger".
- Download the PNG and upload it: Press the download button. Then in YouTube Studio, on the video's "Details" page, put the picture in the thumbnail box.
No more switching apps for a thumbnail design
The video takes its time, and then many people get stuck on the thumbnail. Thumbnail apps have no Bengali fonts or break the conjuncts, the free version stamps a watermark, and a template thumbnail looks the same as on ten other channels.
Here you write the topic and the thumbnail comes, the Bengali words in a real font with the headstroke and conjuncts whole. For the channel's next video, say "same colours and style as the last one", and all your thumbnails will look like one family.
What size a YouTube thumbnail is, and what YouTube itself says
- Size: the thumbnail here is 1280 x 720 pixels. That is 16:9, exactly the shape of an ordinary YouTube video.
- Smallest size: YouTube's help page says the width must be at least 640 pixels; 1280 is double that, so it is safe.
- Format: YouTube accepts JPG or PNG. The thumbnail here downloads as a PNG.
- File size: up to 2 MB when you upload from a phone, much more from a computer. If a thumbnail with a large photo of yours will not upload on the phone, try once from a computer.
- Account verification: to use your own thumbnail, your YouTube account must be verified. If the box is greyed out, verify with your phone number on YouTube first.
- Shorts: a Shorts thumbnail is tall, 9:16. This chat thumbnail is for the wide shape of ordinary videos.
What to write on a thumbnail: the three or four word rule
A thumbnail is not the video title; it is a nudge standing beside the title. Do not repeat the title word for word; give its sharpest part: "Kala bhuna, easy recipe", "Learn it in 5 minutes", "Nobody tells you this".
More than three or four words and nobody can read them on a small phone thumbnail. Put one word in a different colour, like yellow or red, and the eye goes there. Do not promise on the thumbnail what the video does not deliver; viewers who feel cheated do not click the next one.
Should your face be on the thumbnail?
A face makes a thumbnail stand out, especially for vlogs, reviews and teaching channels. If you give a photo, ask for the face big, covering much of the thumbnail, and looking toward the words. Match the expression to the video: a satisfied smile for a recipe, wide eyes for a video that corrects a mistake.
With no photo you get big words on a dark one-colour ground, which works perfectly well too. A screenshot of a frame from the video also works; just pick a sharp moment, not a blurred frame.
Thumbnail mistakes that cost clicks
- Words in the bottom right corner: YouTube puts the video length there and your words get covered. The thumbnail here keeps that corner clear.
- Words hugging the edge: phones and TVs trim the edges a little. Keep key words and faces toward the middle.
- A five-colour, glittery background: two or three colours, light words on a dark ground or the other way round, read from far away.
- Red arrows and circles everywhere: they work once; on every video they make the whole channel look cheap.
- Asking an AI picture to write Bengali on the thumbnail: the letters break. The words go on in the thumbnail's font; the AI picture is only for the scene behind.
What a thumbnail costs
Nothing. The chat answer comes from the daily free AI Token, up to 400,000 a day, and a few changes to the words or colours usually fit inside it.
