The thumbnail is the real advertisement
Whether a video gets watched is decided before the video starts.
People scroll on their phones, and each video gets half a second. In that half second they see one picture and one title.
However good the video is, if that picture does not stop them, nobody will watch it. This is why many YouTubers spend more time on the thumbnail than on making the video.
What works
Among the thumbnails that work in Bangladeshi viewers' feeds, a few things are almost always the same:
One face, with one expression on it. The human eye gets caught by a human face, that is how we are built. Surprised, happy or worried, any clear feeling.
No more than three or four words. A thumbnail has no room to tell a story. "Income in 5 minutes" can be read. A full sentence cannot.
Big and bold text. On a phone screen a thumbnail is the size of a postage stamp. If it cannot be read there, the text might as well not be there.
Opposite colours. Dark text on a light picture, light text on a dark picture. Text in a middle colour blends in.
What does not work
A full sentence. Nobody reads it.
Any random frame taken from the video. The one YouTube picks for you is almost always bad, because it was picked for you, not made.
Too many things. Three pictures, two arrows, a logo and four pieces of text: when you make it small, that is a coloured jumble.
Lying. If the video does not have what the thumbnail showed, people leave in a few seconds, and YouTube notices. Harming your channel for one day of clicks does not pay.
With your own photo
The best results come from using your own photo, because viewers know the person.
Give the chat one photo of yourself and tell it in your own words what you want to make. For example: "Make a YouTube thumbnail with this photo and this text: Website in 5 minutes. Yellow text, dark background."
Saying "with this text" is on purpose, and the reason is in a later part.
The good thing about giving a photo is that the face stays yours, and when viewers see the same person in every video, the channel feels familiar.
Make a few and look
It is better to make two or three and choose than to make one and leave it, and because 20 images a day are free, you can do this.
When choosing, do one test: look at the picture small on your phone. Look at it in the space where a real thumbnail shows on the screen. If the text can be read at that size and you can tell what the thing is, the thumbnail is ready.
About Bangla text
The AI image model cannot draw Bangla letters, and the letters break. So if you ask for a picture "with text" in Bangla, the system does not try to make it, and asks you to ask in a different way.
The different way is "Make a cover or thumbnail with this text". Then the text is placed on the canvas in a real Bangla font, and it is not drawn inside the picture, the spelling stays perfect, and the size comes out exactly 1280 by 720, which is the YouTube size.
Even better: this path is free, and it is not counted in the day's image limit.
After the thumbnail
A good thumbnail stops people, but what keeps them is the first ten seconds of the video.
What to say in those ten seconds so people stay is in the post on reel hooks, and the whole path of making a video is in the post on starting reels.
To make an image for an offer or an event, see the poster maker page.
If you want to make one yourself, open the thumbnail maker page.
Questions and answers
Does it cost money to make a thumbnail? No, a free account can make up to 20 images a day. If you need a very sharp picture, you can turn on HD, and that takes 2,500 Token for each.
Can I make one with my own photo? Yes, and that works best. Give the chat your photo and tell it in your own words what text you want and what colours. When viewers see the same face in every video, the channel feels familiar.
How many words should a thumbnail have? No more than three or four. On a phone the thumbnail looks the size of a postage stamp, and nobody reads a full sentence there. Short, bold text is what works.
Does Bangla text come out right? Bangla drawn inside a picture does not come out right, so if you ask for that, the system tells you to ask in a different way. Say "Make a thumbnail with this text", and the text is placed on the canvas in a real font, with perfect spelling.
Will the picture YouTube picks itself do? Usually not. It is a frame from the video, not a made thumbnail, and almost always it has no expression and no text. A thumbnail you made stands out.
What size should I make it? The YouTube thumbnail size is 1280 by 720. If you say "make a thumbnail with this text", it comes out in exactly that size, and you do not have to say it separately.
What is a simple way to tell a good thumbnail? Look at it small on your phone. If the text can be read at that size and you can tell what the thing is, the thumbnail will work. Most bad thumbnails are nice on a big screen and unclear on a small one.
Is it a problem if the thumbnail shows something the video does not have? Yes. Viewers leave in a few seconds, and YouTube counts that and shows the video to fewer people. You lose the channel's standing in exchange for a day of clicks.
In short
- One face, one clear feeling, and three or four words
- Big bold text, in the opposite colour to the picture
- Using your own photo makes the channel feel familiar
- Make two or three, look at them small on your phone, and pick one
- For Bangla text, not inside the picture: say "make a thumbnail with this text", it is free and the size is right
- Keep in the video what you show in the thumbnail
