What a cover letter is, and why it goes with a CV
A cover letter is a one-page letter sent with your CV saying why you fit this particular post. The CV says what you have done; the cover letter says which of it matters for this job. The same CV goes to ten places, but each advert gets its own cover letter.
Most cover letters go unread because they are all the same: copied from a sample with only the name and post changed. Take two needs from the advert and show two real pieces of your work, and yours stands apart.
Cover letter format, top to bottom
- Top: your name, phone and email, exactly as on your CV; then the date
- Recipient: the name and title if known, otherwise Hiring Manager; then the organisation and address
- Subject line: the post, and the reference number if the advert has one
- First paragraph: which post, where you saw it, and your single best-matching result in one sentence
- Middle paragraph: two needs from the advert and two pieces of your work that meet them, with numbers if you have them
- Last paragraph: a direct request for an interview, then Sincerely and your name; below, Enclosure: CV
Cover letter rules: the mistakes that get it binned
- Opening with "I am writing to apply for": everyone does, so the eye slides past
- Repeating the CV: the letter carries only the two or three things this post needs
- A whole paragraph praising the company: say what you could do in your first months instead
- Running past one page: keep it between 250 and 400 words
- Another company's name left in: the most common slip when copying an old letter
