How do you write a thesis with AI, chapter by chapter, without it becoming cheating?

A thesis is written by chapter: introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion and conclusion. Give the chat your topic and department and the AI plans the whole thesis first, then drafts one chapter per answer. It never invents a source; where unsure it writes [verify]. Rewrite the draft in your own words before you submit.

Writing a thesis with AI, in four steps

  1. Give the topic and the rules: Topic, department, level (BSc, MSc, PhD), word count, citation style and deadline. Add your supervisor's guidelines or your department's format if there is one; the AI follows that first.
  2. Get a plan for the whole thesis: The first answer brings a six-chapter structure, what each chapter holds and roughly how many words, plus a week-by-week schedule to your deadline. With no date given it assumes twelve weeks.
  3. Draft chapter by chapter: Then say which chapter you need. Each answer brings one chapter or part of one, with a short checklist of what supervisors usually look for.
  4. Rewrite it and check it: Read the draft and rewrite it in your own words, look up every reference in your library or Google Scholar, and put a real source wherever it says [verify].

How a thesis is built: six chapters and what each does

Most universities use much the same thesis structure. If your department has its own format, that comes first; if not, follow this one. Each chapter stands on the one before, so keep the order.

A thesis with AI: which part is the AI's and which is yours

AI is good at putting up a structure, turning scattered notes into a draft, making hard English sentences plain and catching mistakes. For someone stuck on the first page, a starting draft saves a great deal of time.

But the research is yours. Which question you are answering, where the data came from, what the results say: the AI does not know these and will not make them up. The results chapter is written only from data you give; without it the space stays as a [ ] blank, never an invented number.

And plainly: handing in AI-written sections as your own is cheating. Read the draft, rewrite it in your own words, and declare the AI help as your university requires. Where the line falls is in the post on studying with AI.

Fake references: the biggest danger in a thesis

A general AI can easily make up author names, paper titles, years and DOIs that sound completely real. One such reference caught in a thesis is treated as fabrication, not carelessness.

The research cards here keep a rule against that: they never invent an author, year, journal or statistic, and where they are not sure a source exists they write [verify] in its place. Still, look up every reference yourself; the AI can be confidently wrong.

Where the research cards are in the chat

The chat's start page has the research cards in two groups. The composer's "More" menu also has "Research paper and thesis". If you are writing a paper for a journal rather than a thesis, choose that: the first answer brings three titles, a research question and an outline of every part, in the IMRaD structure when you have your own data.

Give the chat the papers you have read

A literature review comes from the papers you read. Give their PDFs with the File button by the text box, several in one message. A scanned PDF goes whole as one file, up to 12 PDF pages a message. Paste the address of a paper's web page into your message and it is read when you send.

Remember that a file's text is not kept in the chat; only its name and the AI's answer stay. So when a later chapter needs the same papers, give the files again. Rather than a whole book's PDF at once, give the chapter you need; the answer is more accurate.

Before you submit: format, printing and the viva

Use the copy button under each answer to move the text into Word or Google Docs, and set it in your department's format there. No Word file downloads from here. To read it through or send it to your supervisor, save the answer on an A4 page with the "PDF / Print" button.

Before submitting, give the "Prepare for my viva or defense" card a summary of your thesis: you get the questions the board may ask and draft answers to them. Understand those answers from your own work rather than memorising them.

What is the structure of a thesis paper?

A thesis usually has six chapters: introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion and conclusion, plus an abstract, references and appendices. Write the abstract last. Follow your department's own format where it has one.

Is writing a thesis with AI cheating?

Handing in AI-written sections as your own is cheating. Taking a plan, a structure and a draft and writing it yourself, or having your language corrected, is accepted by many universities and not by others. Check your department's rules and declare the AI help.

Will the AI make up references for my thesis?

No. The research cards here invent no author, year, journal or DOI; they cite papers you gave or works certain to exist, and otherwise mark the spot for you to check instead of filling it. Still look up every reference yourself.

Is a research paper written the same way as a thesis?

Close, but shorter. A research paper usually follows IMRaD: abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion and conclusion. Start with "Research paper and thesis" in the chat's More menu and you first get three titles, a research question and an outline.

Can I write my thesis in Bengali?

Yes. Write in Bengali and the draft comes in Bengali; for English, say "write it in English". Many departments want the thesis submitted in English, so check that rule first.
